It’s possible that Wizards & Warriors is my favorite NES game of all time. I don’t know what it is about this one, but once I start playing it, I just… can’t stop. One of my core memories is playing this game for hours on end while listening to a fully dramatized audio version of The Lord of the Rings — something like 12 hours long on cassette tapes. You play as Kuros, the Knight Warrior of the Books of Excalibur (yeah, it’s that kind of fantasy). The gameplay blends tight platforming with exploration and item collection — a kind of proto-Metroidvania if you squint. The music, by David Wise, absolutely slaps. And that cover art? Pure late '80s metal album energy.
