So, I love Smurf: Rescue in Gargamel’s Castle on the ColecoVision. Even the Atari 2600 version has charm. They’re simple games, sure — but they’ve got good graphics (for the time), clean controls, and they feel like Smurf adventures. This 1994 NES release? Not so much. Released very late in the NES life cycle (in Europe only), this version of The Smurfs is a bland, middle-of-the-road platformer. It looks okay — colorful enough, recognizable characters, but nothing standout. And the gameplay? Meh. The controls aren’t awful, but they’re not tight either, and in a platformer, that’s a killer. I’ll say it again: bad or even just mushy controls ruin otherwise okay games. There’s no story to grab onto, and that’s a huge missed opportunity. If this had leaned into being an RPG-lite or had more character moments, maybe I’d care. Instead, you just kind of hop around generic stages. There’s no magic. Just a licensed platformer from the era when everyone was churning these out. Some facts: This game was developed by Infogrames, who also made Tintin in Tibet and Asterix games. It was released for NES, SNES, Game Boy, Master System, and Genesis — but only in Europe. The NES version is based on the same engine used for some of their other late-gen titles, and you can feel that templated approach. If you love the Smurfs like I do, it’s a bummer. There’s potential in a Smurfs RPG, or even a story-driven side-scroller. But this one’s just a quick cash-in on a popular IP. And yeah, I played it longer than I should have… out of nostalgia.
