Double Dragon will always be the OG beat-’em-up quarter muncher for me. This was the game that set the tone for the entire side-scrolling brawler genre. I first played it at the West World arcade in Marina Del Rey, but my most vivid memory is finishing it with a crew of friends at a pizza place called Regular John’s in Brentwood. It was a birthday party, the quarters were flowing, and we all took turns beating up gang members on our way to rescue Marian. When we finally beat the game, we all huddled around the cabinet to watch the ending. That was the only time I ever finished an arcade game as a kid. Before Double Dragon, I didn’t even realize that “finishing” an arcade game was a thing. The games I knew — Pac-Man, Donkey Kong — just kept going until you died. This? This was different. You play as Billy and Jimmy Lee, taking on waves of street punks with punches, kicks, and an arsenal of weapons you could pick up along the way — baseball bats, whips, knives. It even had the now-infamous “friendly fire” mechanic, letting you accidentally (or accidentally) smack your co-op partner. The game spawned sequels, home ports, a cartoon, and a movie, but the original arcade version still hits like it did back in the day.
