Back in the day, Zaxxon on ColecoVision was the port. Like, if you had this version, you were living large. It was the one you’d show off to your Atari friends to make them question their life choices. This thing looked good. Early isometric graphics that blew my little mind. It actually felt like the arcade game—which, in 1983, was saying a lot. That angled 3D view, the shadow under your ship, the altitude meter—it was like the future showed up in your living room, plugged into the front of your wood-paneled TV. Now, was it perfect? No. But it was real good. And compared to the Atari 2600 version—which, by the way, I also made a video about—this is like staying at the Ritz vs. a Motel 6 off the freeway. The 2600 version is technically the same game, but only if you squint hard and use your imagination. ColecoVision’s version actually looks like Zaxxon. Some cool trivia: Zaxxon was developed by Sega and released in arcades in 1982. It was one of the first arcade games to use isometric projection, giving it that pseudo-3D look. The name "Zaxxon" was created by combining “z-axis” (for the 3D feel) and the very early-’80s trend of adding “-on” to everything to make it sound spacey. It was also one of the first video games to be advertised on TV, which is wild to think about now. The ColecoVision version was a big flex for the system. It proved that home consoles could come close to arcade quality—at least if you had the right hardware.
