My fondest memories of watching Ren & Stimpy go back to the early ‘90s, when I was about 19 — a pot-smoking hippie, no apologies for that chapter of my life. I was on this thing where I’d only smoke once a week, and that once was always right before Ren & Stimpy came on. And back then, you couldn’t stream anything — you waited for the show, planned around it. When it aired, that was the event. I didn’t know about Ren & Stimpy: Buckaroo$! on NES back then. It totally slipped past me. But playing it now, it hits that early '90s vibe hard. The art, the music, the weirdness — it’s all unmistakably of its time. Playing it dropped me right back into that hazy time when everything was new, I was just entering adulthood, and the world felt wide open and very, very strange. Now, I don’t get high anymore. New chapter. New adventures. But it’s cool when something, even a glitchy little NES game, pulls you back into a moment like that. Some facts: Ren & Stimpy Show: Buckaroo$! was developed by Imagineering Inc. and published by THQ in 1993 — very late in the NES life cycle. It was one of several Ren & Stimpy games released across different platforms, but this one is exclusive to the NES. You switch between Ren and Stimpy as you platform through surreal stages full of bizarre enemies and even weirder hit detection. It's janky, but it tries.
