I was terrible at flight sims as a kid. Most of the time I’d get overwhelmed, crash into something, and move on to more important things—like skateboarding, riding my bike, or rolling dice with my D&D group. But Skyfox? Skyfox was different. This was one of the few first-person air combat games that actually made sense to me. It didn’t overload you with a thousand switches and systems. It was fast, accessible, and honestly kind of awesome. You’re flying a futuristic jet, shooting down waves of enemy fighters and tanks, and defending your base from total destruction. Simple. Fun. Playable. Released in 1984 by Electronic Arts (back when that name meant something else entirely), Skyfox was developed by Ray Tobey when he was just 17. It became one of the early hits for EA and was ported to pretty much everything—but the C64 version? That’s the one I played. And it still holds up. It had just enough flight sim flavor to feel high-tech for the time, but not so much that you needed a pilot’s license to enjoy it. Great visuals, solid controls, and a satisfying loop of scanning the radar, firing missiles, and feeling like maybe, just maybe, I wasn’t completely terrible at flying games. I still like Skyfox.
