It’s the game that formed id Software — yeah, that id Software. The one that unleashed Doom, Wolfenstein 3D, and Quake on the world. Before they were melting PCs with BFGs, they were showing the world that PC platformers could move like console games. Marooned on Mars was a technical breakthrough. The team — including John Carmack and John Romero — developed a smooth-scrolling platform engine that let the game move side-to-side and up-and-down fluidly on a DOS PC. That was unheard of at the time. PC games just didn’t do that. Console kids had Mario, but PC users were stuck with stuff that moved like molasses… until Keen showed up. Something about the 8086 CPU, CGA/EGA graphics, and the open hardware made these early PC games feel totally distinct from console titles. This one’s got that feel in spades. The art is colorful, the enemies are weird (in a good way), and the whole game has a sense of humor baked into every corner. You’re an eight-year-old genius, Billy Blaze, who builds a spaceship in his backyard and flies to Mars — like you do — only to have your parts stolen by aliens. It’s part of a three-episode shareware release, with Marooned on Mars being the first. And yeah, you can still play it today — it holds up shockingly well.
