The MiG-17SG is a modification of the MiG-17 Fresco A designed to accomodate an SRD-3 Grad radar rangefinder in the nose along with an ASP-4N Sneg optical sight inside the cockpit. These two systems were direct copies of the AN/APG-30 radar rangefinder and optical sight present on the F-86. The F-86A-5 that these systems were reverse engineered from was damaged and forced to make a belly landing on the mouth of the river Chonchongi in 1951 as part of the Korean war. Soviets were quickly at the scene to retrieve the aircraft for examination. By 1952 the components of the sabre were reverse- engineered and thus the MiG-17SG was created. During testing, the radar rangefinder and gunsight proved to be satisfactory, but were cancelled in favor of the SRD-1 domestically designed radar rangefinder with better performance, which was subsequently installed in all MiG-17Fs.
