On the 1st of May 1960, a U-2 Dragon Lady spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers was shot down by an S-75 SAM site over the Soviet Union. The wreckage, which remained mostly intact, was quickly seized and sent for analysis to OKB-49 also known as Beriev. It was then ordered that the U-2 and its J75-P-13 engines should be copied and produced in 5 examples. The engines were successfully reverse-engineered and given the designation RD-16-75. The first fuselage was completed in April of 1961 and was meant to be used as an aerial reconnaissance aircraft, baloon interceptor and weather research platform.
