About The MiG-29 9-01 (bort number Mp3 Sound Effect
The MiG-29 9-01 (bort number 01 blue) was the first ever flightworthy prototype of the MiG-29. Information about this aircraft is scarce if not non-existent, so we will analyse what we know about it and what we can deduce from the existing photos. It first flew on the 6th of October 1977 and used two early variants of the RD-33, which had slightly lower thrust and a longer nozzle. From the two gun muzzles we can tell it was most likely meant to be equipped with a modified GSh-23 double barrel 23mm cannon, however it is unlikely that it was installed on board. The smaller radar cone indicates that most likely the aircraft was not equipped with a radar either, similar to the first MiG-23 prototype which also presented a smaller nose with no radar. No IRST sensor seems to be present in any of the pictures from 1977, however it can currently be seen at the Central Air Force Museum with an IRST "ball" in front of the canopy. This sensor was probably installed later on for testing purposes. The landing gear was positioned slightly forward compared to the production model while also featuring a strange debris deflector. The vertical stabilizers are also lacking the chaff/flare dispensers seen on the production model while also being a slightly different shape. It is also possible that this aircraft had a reduced fuel capacity due to the slightly smaller hump in the fuselage. This aircraft is currently located at the Central Air Force Museum in Monino.
