Since the MiG-29 Sniper is getting added to War Thunder I figured I'd make a post talking about it in depth. For starters, the MiG-29 Sniper was a regular MiG-29 chassis 9.12 belonging to the Romanian Air Force which was modernized in colaboration with DASA and Elbit Systems, with its first flight being on May 5th, 2000. The main improvements of the program were as follows: new SPS-20(V) radar warning receiver, new mission computer, modern cockpit with two additional MFDs, compatibility with western missiles and bombs, HOTAS controls, new HUD, new HMD and more. Many people think that it got a new radar, but in reality the radar on board was a soviet N019E Rubin radar with a range of ~70km. Another common misconception is that this plane was capable of carrying AMRAAMs and sidewinders, which brings us to armament. The regular arsenal of R-27R/T, R-73 and R-60 missiles remained, but since this aircraft had a MIL-STD-1553B data bus it could also be equipped with Python 3 and Magic 2 missiles, Litening pod and bombs of the Opher and Griffin types. Flight performance remained the same as on the regular MiG-29. The project was abandoned the same year it first flew in due to a lack of budget. In a way I am glad that this plane will get some attention but at the same time I am upset that many people will know it purely because of War Thunder and believe that it is accurate to real life, when in reality the one in-game is more of a parody of the Sniper.
