"Whenever" - Gareth Donkin (@garethdonkin) When I first heard this song back in November, it pretty immediately made me think of Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder. Something about the vocals sounded like Michael's stylings and the instrumental, especially the synths, sounded like many a Stevie song. I became pretty addicted to listening to this song (and the album) for a couple weeks there. Looking into Gareth more, the first thing I notice is he seems very happy, energetic, and young. Much of his success so far comes from people discovering his recordings online, like his manager, Scott Barkham, who found one of Gareth's songs when looking for yacht rock on Spotify. (Turns out Barkham also manages Hiatus Kaiyote (@hiatuskaiyote), which I did a recent post about. I swear I didn't plan that, just a small world.) Gareth is also part of the label "drink sum wtr", which was founded by Nigil Mack, one of the people that helped discover Kid Cudi. I've been digging into the label and every artist on it is worth listening to (especially Aja Monet (@ajamonet), who I'll probably do a post on soon). The two last things I'll say about Gareth are: 1. Sounds like he's largely untested as live performer, but something tells me the dude can put on a show. Now that his albums out, I look forward to him getting out there and hitting some stages, hopefully stateside... 2. He's already planning some Earth, Wind, and Fire esque horns for the next project. As a sax player, I'm very excited by this. Gareth, if you need some sax, I know a guy with a remote recording set up...
