"Everythings's Beautiful" - Hiatus Kaiyote Hiatus Kaiyote (@Hiatus Kaiyote) is easily one of my favorite bands of all time. I once did a "Jazz" cover of their song "By Fire" for my senior recital of music school. One of my top live show memories was when they played Seattle: someone in the crowd yelled out "Play Molasses!", and Nai Palm, their incredible singer/guitarist, decked out in high-waisted jeans and a Wonder Woman bra, corrected him by replying "we already played that you c*nt!" A perfect response from a perfect Australian. I've been a fan since their first album, which I came across when the rapper Q-Tip added a verse to one of the songs on the album ("Nakamarra". If you're new to Hiatus, highly recommend this as a primer). I've followed along ever since. You may notice a bit of a gap between their second (2015) and third (2021) album. This is the time during which Nai Palm was battling breast cancer and the band took a bit of a reprieve (I'm not gonna say "went on a hiatus" because that joke is corny and I'm sure it's been done 100's of times). Since I'm a good person, I was mostly worried about her well-being, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't also worried we may never get another Hiatus record. But thankfully, Nai recovered and her and the band made a triumphant return with Mood Valiant. They deliver on every album, using their unique style to keep the listener both groovin' and guessin', and Mood Valiant is no exception. Now, we have the first single for their 4th project. I couldn't find any confirmation of when the project is due out, but at the very least we know there's more to come, hopefully sooner than later. Also, along with this single, they released a full concert video of a show they did recently at a Melbourne venue that has been formative for the group over the years.
