Dvine Tracks: August (Week 4) Life happened so I didn't get around to making an individual post for each of these songs. Nonetheless, here's a brief on the seven songs that finish off my August playlist. "Stay Blessed" by Genesis Owusu: Genesis is an enigma. This is off their their newest album (and 3rd they've released) titled STRUGGLER. I'd say half the album, including this song, sounds like new age punk, while the rest varies from R&B slow jams to disco to Prince-esque tracks. "Old Friends" by LOONY: Maybe the first song I've featured where I like the song but I'm not so sure about the artist behind it. She seems like an industry plant. Regardless, her music hits the neo-soul spot for me and she's got some impressive people in her orbit, including Mick Jenkins who is also featured in this playlist. "DYKWYD" by Butcher Brown, Braxton Cook: I LOVE Butcher Brown. Too much to say about them and this is the first single ahead of (hopefully) a new album that's coming out, so I'm sure I'll have a post dedicated to them soon. Keeping it short, I think they're the next generation of The Roots and have a lot still to say. Stay tuned. "Get Up" by sir Was: I also LOVE sir Was. Basically identical to Butcher Brown, I've been a fan of his for some years and am very excited to see this single come out in hopes that it means another album is on it's way. He has a distinct style that's easy to get addicted to listening to. "Bug Collector" by Haley Heynderickx: Apparently I've been sleeping on this song and this artist because it has millions of plays and came out in 2018. But I only just discovered it. I'm a little suspicious that the algos decided recently that it should be popular because since I found it, it seems everyone in my orbit is now listening to it too. Check it out, quite the vibe. "Candy" by Mk.gee, Two star: Mk.gee is purposely mysterious it seems. I also think Two star is just another group he started/is a part of. You may not recognize his name but I bet you've heard his song "You" while out in the world. This song may be an acquired taste so listen to it a few times before you dismiss it. "Woo Together" by Bernie Worrell: Had to end the August playlist with an absolutely funky oldies banger. Unsurprisingly, Bernie was a part of Parliament Funkadelic and a close conspirator with George Clinton and Bootsy Collins. He also did a stint with David Byrne's Talking Heads throughout the 80's. A legend through and through. Anyways, hope you find something you like. #musicrecommendation #songsuggestions #musictok #musicdiscovery #songreels #underratedsongs #music #song #spotifyplaylist #igdaily #songsilike #musicilike
Featured song: Sunset Canyon by Foxwarren I've been getting into Andy Shauf the last couple years. He scratches that mellow indie itch for me. It's like Iron and Wine or Laura Marling, but with slightly more electric instruments and production effects on vocals. I pretty immediately recognized his voice when this song came on in a playlist. Turns out this is a band he has with his childhood friends. This is the only album they've put out, which was released in 2018. And likely it'll stay that way because Andy's solo career continues to take off. Two interesting details: 1. This band is Canadian af. They're from Saskatchewan and the band is named after a town in Manitoba. That's the most Canadian background I've ever heard. 2. The algo must have decided it's time for the world to hear this or something. Because, again, this came out in 2018 and all of a sudden it's Andy's #1 song on Spotify. No idea what happened there. If you know, fill me in. Anyways, hope you find something you like. #musicrecommendation #songsuggestions #musictok #musicdiscovery #songreels #underratedsongs #music #song #spotifyplaylist #igdaily #songsilike #musicilike #andyshauf #foxwarren #sunsetcanyon #saskatchewan #manitoba #origami #canada
Featured song: 23 by Cleo Sol Cleo Sol is quickly becoming one of my new favorites. Her music is often a nice kind of melancholy with beautiful arrangements and mellow grooves. And her voice is both soothing and haunting. Reading up on her, I realized the algo likely put her on my radar because of the collabs she's done with Little Simz, who is hands down one of my favorite rappers right now. Coincidentally, I have a song cued up for next week by Obongjayar, who is another artist I've started listening to because of a collab with Little Simz. So, if you don't already, this is your PSA to start checking out Little Simz. I think she's one of the most important artists to be paying attention to right now. Oh, and all three of these artists I've mentioned are part of the British music scene. Gotta love a good scene. I've already said a lot, but one thing I'll say about this song specifically is the Shirley Temple esque chorus vocals towards the end. I want someone to sample those and make a beat. Maybe I'll do it, who knows. Anyways, hope you find something you like. #musicrecommendation #songsuggestions #musictok #musicdiscovery #songreels #underratedsongs #music #song #spotifyplaylist #igdaily #songsilike #musicilike #cleosol #23 #littlesimz #obangjayar #britishmusic #manipulation
"Smoke Break-Dance" by Mick Jenkins feat. JID I was very stoked when I saw this collab happened. Both these guys are some of the best MCs to ever do it, with a similar style and level of lyricism. They're at totally different points in their careers, but deserve the same level of respect. Mick Jenkins has been at it awhile and I've enjoyed his music for much of that time. And with the release of his album The Patience, which this track is on, he adds to a long discography of high level art. Coming out of Chicago, he's never achieved the same level of acclaim as his peers he was coming up with like Chance The Rapper and Vic Mensa. But that's not for lack of impressive music featuring his unique, smooth style. Regardless of if he can finally make some big waves with this album or the next, he's established himself as a true MC that anyone can appreciate. For JID though, the crown is his for the taking. And he's just getting started. I truly believe that JID is the next big thing in Rap, destined to join the ranks of people like Kendrick, Cole, Kanye, JAY-Z, Tupac, Biggie, Nas... you get it. His lyricism, musicality, and consciousness could likely lead the next evolution of Rap. With the release of his third album in '22, The Forever Story, he started to reach a lot of people and I think his next release, whenever that is, will dominate the charts. All that said, this song is sick and I love both these artists. Anyways, hope you find something you like. #rap #mickjenkins #jid #thepatience #smokebreak #CapCut

"Y.B.P. (feat. Bruiser Wolf)" - Danny Brown Here are two Detroit rappers, both with their own very unique style. One has been putting out music for a while and had some success. The other is just getting started. Both are 42 years old. Now, I haven't paid too close attention to Danny Brown throughout the years, but I have enjoyed occasional songs by him since his early days. I've also taken note that, while remaining an "underground" rapper, he continues to stick around. In fact, some would say 2023 may have been his biggest year yet, releasing one solo album, Quaranta, which this track is on, and a very popular collab album with JPEGMAFIA called SCARING THE HOES. Also, Danny is a character. He has a very distinct laugh. If you don't really know about him, look up any interview of him and you'll see what I mean. He also has a podcast now. Bruiser is a bit of a mystery, but that doesn't make him any less interesting. Whilst rolling into his 40's, he released his first album, seemingly out of nowhere. Sounds like he's had his fair share of odd jobs throughout his life before that. I love Bruiser's lilting, funky style and comedic lines. It's immediately recognizable. When I first heard Y.B.P., I knew I'd heard that voice before somewhere. Looked him up and I realized, sure enough, the algos had previously exposed me to a song on his first album that I loved: "I'm A Instrument" featuring, you guessed it, Danny Brown. (Highly recommend listening to that song if you like this one.) Which is exactly why I wanted to do a post about both these guys. I love their collaborations. I love that they're the same age but at completely different phases of their careers. I love that they don't care one bit about being mainstream. Anyways, hope you find something you like. #dannybrown #bruiserwolf #detroitmusic #alternativehiphop #ybp
