"African Dreams - Remix" by Seun Kuti, Black Thought As a big fan of hip-hop (I wouldn't call myself a true hip-hop head, but maybe hip-hop-head-cusp), I wanted to start off the September playlist with this really cool moment in hip-hop history. Quick lesson, hip-hop started with DJs sampling vinyls for breakbeats, or repeatable clips of drum breaks that could serve as the foundation for a track. Many of these breakbeats came from afrobeat music, which was pioneered by Fela Kuti. Lesson over. Fast-forwarding 50 years to this year, Fela's son Seun has been carrying the torch and continuing his Dad's legacy, both as a bandleader that's bringing Afrobeat music to the entire world as well as a political activist for African people. In 2018, he and his band Egypt 80 (which Fela started), released Black Times. Then, one of the greatest hip-hop MCs to do it, Black Thought, followed in the tradition of rapping over Afrobeat music and worked with Seun to create a handful of remixes of songs from that album. Seun said in an interview for the EP of remixes "I don't think this has been done before" and that this is "a new wave...a new beginning of a musical relationship." My interpretation of what he means is that an Afrobeat and hip-hop artist have never worked so closely together to sample the original recordings and make a new hip-hop creation out of it. Black Thought kept his lyrics very closely tied to the original meaning of the songs. Seun and Black Thought worked hard together to create something special that's a new evolution of both of their respective genres. If this interests you, you should definitely listen to the whole EP.
