About 🌿In this excerpt from a Mp3 Sound Effect
🌿In this excerpt from a medieval herbal, we experience a medieval herbalist try to rank the Rose, the Lily, and the Violet… and fail, because they’re all too wonderful🌸🌿 🌿These words come from a Middle English translation (MS Hunter 497) of an even older medieval herbal known as “Macer Floridus’ De Viribus Herbarum” which is believed to have been written by a person named Odo de Meung-sur-Loire sometime in the 11th century, and was at least partially based on much older texts from antiquity. It was written in Latin (and in verse!), and during the course of the medieval era and into the Renaissance it was widely used, adapted, and translated into various languages, including multiple translations in Middle English, like the manuscript I’m reciting from today. 🌸While reading through this text, I noticed that the entries for the Rose, the Lily, and the Violet referenced each other; and that it seemed that the herbalist may have had some beauty-induced amnesia while speaking of the relative virtues of these three wildflowers. When speaking of the Rose, the herbalist claims that it is the Flower of All Flowers, surpassing all other flowers in various ways; but when speaking of the Lily, the herbalist says that the Lily makes no concessions to the Rose neither in its beauty nor its fragrance NOR its medicinal properties; and when speaking of the Violet, the herbalist gushes that neither the mighty Rose nor the shining Lily can surpass the Violet in any way. Ahahahaha🌸 I can’t help but relate, and somehow this bit of humanity slipped into such an informative text brought the whole text to life for me, and conjured a vision of this herbalist in my imagination. 🌿I was able to prepare this transcription and recitation thanks to the wonderful website of The Málaga Corpus of Late Middle English Scientific Prose, which hosts a facsimile of this text, as well as a transcription and helpful information on the manuscript’s history. I’m very grateful to this organization for making all this available online for study- scholarship for all! #medieval #middleages #middleenglish #oldenglish #herbal #plantmedicine #11thcentury #reenactment #plants 🌿🌸Sources and Resources🌸🌿 Facsimile of a Middle English translation/adaptation of “Macer’s De viribus herbarum”, held by the Glasgow University Library; includes a wonderful transcription of the text prepared by Javier Calle Martín: https://hunter.uma.es/manuscript/hu497 The Málaga Corpus of Late Middle English Scientific Prose (website), informational entry on Hunter MS 497, prepared by María Laura Esteban Segura https://hunter.uma.es/descriptionhu497 The Middle English Compendium - Online Dictionary, University of Michigan🌿In This Excerpt From A Sound Effects Free Download.
