🏰🧵Today we are making a medieval fingerloop braid called “A Lace Cheyne,” a gorgeous design of interlocking links in alternating colors which wrap around this sturdy, squarish braid. This braiding pattern was found in a late medieval manuscript (c. 1450) which is catalogued as Harley MS 2320. The manuscript is a “miscellany of treatises” (British Library) that includes a calendar complete with lunar cycle, zodiac, and astrological information; writings on zodiac-related prognostication and moon-related prognostication; and more, including our section detailing patterns for fingerloop braids🧵 🏰Fingerloop braids were used widely in the medieval era for both ornamental and practical purposes, mainly on clothing and accessories. If you’ve been wanting to get into historical handicrafting, this is a really wonderful and rewarding place to start! If you’d like to learn much more about the basics of the craft, I have an Intro to Medieval Fingerloop Braiding video available on YouTube; and several pattern videos available on my Patreon. See you there🧵 🧵Quick side note that while Harley MS 2320 used to be available for all online via the British Library, it hasn’t been available for online viewing for several years now as a result of the cyber attack that the library suffered some years ago. I found the pattern transcribed and made available to all on two wonderful websites: fingerloop.org and silkewerk.com. Both of these website are amazing resources for anyone interested in fingerloop braiding! #medieval #medievalcraft #historical #historicalfashion #15thcentury #fingerloopbraiding #livinghistory #crafting #handicraft #reenactment 🏰🧵Sources and Resources🧵🏰 🧵Fingerloop.org - a brilliant website dedicated to fingerloop braiding, with wonderful historical information and many braiding patterns; I found a transcription of the Harley MS 2320 instructions for “The Lace Cheyne” here 🧵Silkewerk.com - a wonderful website created by the medieval textile scholar Cindy Myers, dedicated to medieval textile arts; I found a transcription of the Harley MS 2320 instructions for “The Lace Cheyne” here 🧵“A Study of London, British Library Harley MS 2320: its Social, Cultural and Economic Environment” a Master’s thesis by Pamela Treanor, 2020🏰🧵Today We Are Making A Sound Effects Free Download.
