About 🌿Today’s herb lore comes from Mp3 Sound Effect

🌿Today’s herb lore comes from a 1495 Middle English printing of “De proprietatibus rerum” / “On the properties of things,” which was originally scribed in the 13th century, and in Latin. Written by a man called Bartholomaeus Anglicus (Bartholomew the Englishman), this massive tome is a very early version of the encyclopedia, describing a great many number of plants, animals, heavenly bodies, elements, weather, seasons, countries, maladies, lifecycles… “Things” essentially. Among this massive list is a section on “Arboribos et Herbis” / “Trees and Herbs.” The 141st plant to be described is the medicinal and magical herb “Rewe” / “Rue.”🌿 In many places in the world, Rue is considered to be a deeply magical plant. It is said that as a charm, Rue carries great protective magic against malevolent forces; and in today’s text, the medieval herbalist speaks of Rue’s magic against venom and venomous animals, both when carried as a charm and when used to anoint a person. It’s even said to keep Toads and Snakes from overrunning your garden if it’s planted strategically🌿 One of my favorite things about this section on Rue, is the detail that the plant does best when it’s sown or planted at the Autumn Equinox, “when day and night are equally long.” Very witchy, especially in combination with the tip that Rue will thrive best if planted under a Fig Tree, another plant with an intense magic of its own🌿 #plants #plantmagic #plantlore #lore #apothecary #medieval #middleenglish #oldenglish 🌿Sources and Resources🌿 “De proprietatibus rerum” by Bartholomaeus Anglicus, 1495 Middle English printing, via Internet Archive “Batman vppon Bartholome his booke De proprietatibus rerum, newly corrected, enlarged and amended”, a 16th century adaptation of “De proprietatibus rerum” (transcription), via the University of Michigan Library Digital Collections 🌿Image Attributions🌿 Entry for ‘ruta’, from an illustrated Old English Herbal, England, c. 1000–1025, [Cotton MS Vitellius C III](http://www.bl.uk/manuscripts/FullDisplay.aspx?index=0&ref=Cotton_MS_Vitellius_C_III), British Library, Public domain Bufo (Toad), Der naturen bloeme, detail from 129v-130r, Jacob van Maerlant, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons “Rue,” Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues, painted with watercolor between 1560 and 1575, Public domain, via Wikimedia Commons
