🌿The Yarrow Charm Song🌿 Last week, I shared a traditional Scottish plant incantation, the Yarrow Charm / Earr Thalamhainn, which was recited in the late 1800s by a dairy-woman from Skye named Mary Stewart, (“she knew many occult runes and occult arts”). It was subsequently transcribed, translated and published in 1900 by a man named Alexander Carmichael in a precious tome called “Carmina Gadelica.” I’ve made my own translation here with the support of his beautiful translation and the online Scots Garlic dictionary “Faclair.” I became a bit obsessed with this charm, and so decided to set it to music; and because this charm was passed down to us by a woman, it felt important to me that I also set it to a tune passed down to us by a woman. I felt very lucky to find this incredible puirt à beul tune that the song collector Marjory Kennedy-Fraser published in a collection of Hebridean songs in 1909, called “Songs of the Hebrides” (Volume 1, Preliminaries, pg XX). This tune was sung to her by a woman identified only as “the wife of Duncan-of-the-Sgeulachdan,” a performance which had a deep impact on Kennedy-Fraser: “the electrifying effect of which I shall never forget.” Puirt à beul is a tradition of singing that allows the voice to function as an instrument, with lyrics taking a way-far backseat to the rhythm and melody of the tune; sometimes called mouth-music. I loved the intensity of this tune, its sudden swoops, its leaping rhythm- somehow and miraculously fitting with near perfection to the rhythm and intensity of the Yarrow Charm. Because this is a charm, after all, and because this tune is appropriately difficult to sing, I decided for myself that I could only activate the charm if I could sing each verse in a single breath, breathing only before the refrain of “In the meadow I shall gather Yarrow/ Buainidh mi an Earr Reidh”🌿An energetic exchange to help conjure the magic🌿 #magic #spell #plants #plantmagic #folklore #lore #yarrow #celticharp #scottish 🌿Sources and Resources🌿 🌿“Carmina Gadelica : Ortha Nan Gaidheal : Hymns and Incantations : Volume 2” compiled and translated by Alexander Carmichael, published in 1900, available to all online via Internet Archive 🌿”Songs of the Hebrides,” by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser, 1909, available to all online via IMSLP 🌿Scots Gaelic Online Dictionary: faclair.com
