✨☁️🌙One of my favorite folk songs, “Tha mi sgìth” (often called “A Fairy’s Love Song”) is a Hebridean lament in Scots Gaelic. It’s sung by a Faërie who has fallen in love with a human, and from whom they’ve been parted. The familiar love story radiating with the otherworldliness of Faërie enchantment captives me; as does the wild angst of the faërie described in the chorus: “Alone and miserable, I rip at the ferns.” ✨I’m singing only two of the verses here, so I’ll tell you that in additional verses, the faërie asserts that they’d come running the moment their beloved appears again; as well as describing themself miserably circling the fairy hill as they wait. ☁️I love how completely the lush enchantment of the natural world is caught up in the faërie’s experience as they sing in the thick of the bracken, at the top of the hill, in the grove resounding with birdsong, in the misty valley, and in the deeps of the faërie fort. 🌙Along with many other beautiful songs, “Tha mi sgìth” was collected from Hebridean singers and subsequently published in a large collection by Marjory Kennedy-Fraser in the late 19th/early 20th century. That collection has been digitized and made available to all online through IMSLP.org (search “Songs of the Hebrides”). ☁️If you’re interested in learning this song in Scots Gaelic, I found an incredible site that guides you through much of the pronunciation and through the learning of the tune. Search “Tha mi sgìth” at the website learngaelic.scot ; I also greatly relied on the marvelous online Scots Gaelic dictionary faclair.com both for making my own translation of the text and for learning the pronunciation of this beautiful text. Always looking forward to improving my pronunciation with time✨ ✨I’ve actually known this song for many many years, since singing the Scots version in my middle school choir. Though the Scots text differs greatly from the Scots Gaelic text, it’s also very beautiful, and its imagery has stuck with me through the years: “When I see the curlew rising or the plover wheeling/ Then I trow my mortal lover back to me is stealing.” #faerie #fairies #fae #folklore #hebrides #scottish #celticmusic #celtic✨☁️🌙One Of My Favorite Folk Sound Effects Free Download.
