Branches of these arteries anastomose (join together) to form a superficial and deep ring that provides collateral circulation to the hand. Allen’s test is a way to assess this collateral circulation. It’s commonly used before hand surgery or before an arterial blood gas. You can do it on yourself… 1. Occlude both radial AND ulnar arteries 2. Pump hand to remove arterial blood 3. Open the hand (it should be pale in the distribution of the artery) 4. Lift fingers off ONE of the arteries In response, a ‘reactive hyperaemia’ should develop - where blood rushes to the pale tissue through collateral circulation, causing it to turn red!
