I just released a long-form video that takes a deep dive into the composition of Pendulum. 🎥 🔗 in bio ⬆️ This piece originated from an idea by my longtime friend and collaborator, Ed Hanley: to compose, record, and produce an immersive tabla tarang—a performance that utilizes multiple pitched tabla drums, each tuned to a distinct note. We mapped a full Lydian scale across Ed’s collection of tabla, then recorded each one individually to build a rich, immersive harmonic bed. From there, I orchestrated the tabla spatially, placing each pitch in a unique location around the listener. I layered both slow and double-time variations of Ed’s 40-beat kaida composition and then reimagined the arrangement using immersive step sequencing and geometric speaker patterns. I specifically composed these for a 9.0.6 Dolby Atmos Speaker array. Creating album art that represented IMMERSED was an abstract process for me. The idea of a still image that represents the music, film and the 38 artists who are involved was something I had to consider for a long time. I have always been drawn to pendulum art, not only the finished image, but the act of watching it unfold. The natural, cyclical flow of this art form feels musical to me. The circular flow and three-dimensional motion of pendulum art felt like an appropriate visual metaphor for this record. Cinematographer and Co-Director Michael Fisher connected me with brilliant artist Grahame Lynch and we worked together to create the pendulum art that is featured as the album cover, as well as in the film itself. The album cover features an image captured by photographer Maaike Roosendaal. What I love about that photo is that it shows not only the canvas, but also the overflow of paint on the black fabric we placed beneath it. It is an image of a moment in time that cannot be reproduced, as once the canvas was removed from that setting, that visual experience no longer exists. I worked with Andrew Kay to create the album art work. Since IMMERSED is a cinematic visual album, where the music and film are one — so when it came to creating a still image for the cover, I wanted the artwork to also embody motion and time. After all, music itself is an art form that can only be experienced through time. For me, the video of the pendulum art being created mirrors the way music unfolds — over time, through motion, and as a process. I’m here in Toronto at the TD Music Hall, creating a dedicated mix of the IMMERSED album for its June 7 world premiere. It’s a unique experience to stand in this incredible room, with my laptop, the Pro Tools session, the Dolby Atmos Renderer and the full video to sculpt a custom mix for this space. TD Music Hall features a 38-speaker D&B immersive playback system (DS100), and we’ve configured a virtual 9.1.6 layout within that environment for this event. I’m using the Dolby Atmos master session and sending it via Dante into their D&B system. From there, it’s all about subtle adjustments (level rides, EQ tweaks, and spatial refinements) that make the music translate in the room. We just finished a very special immersive recording session here in the auditorium at the @agakhanmuseumtoronto in Toronto. This project is a partnership between the Aga Khan Museum and @smallworldmusic 🙌🏼 The ensemble was led by the legendary Qawwali singers @fareed.ayaz.92 and Abu Muhammad featured 14 artists in total including 4 artists from here in Toronto. This performance was recorded with the intent to be played back as part of an immersive installation where the audience at the centre of the experience surrounded by speakers and projections. I worked with Reza Moghaddas from small world Music to design the recording plan for this recording session. 11 channel immersive microphone array (The Gray Array 😀) - 7x @schoepsmikrofone MK4 on the lower layer - 4X DPA 4006 on the upper layer Spot mics were also added for individual instruments to be able to refine balance and proximity later in mixing. Taking a moment to speak about the devastating cuts being proposed to music education in the Toronto District School Board. Also highlighting the incredible work being done by the @coalitionmusiced. Like math, science, or language, music helps us develop as human beings. It teaches trust, discipline, and empathy while also expanding our cognitive abilities. I’m standing here in the Glen Stewart Ravine—just steps from Balmy Beach, Glen Ames, and Malvern, the three schools where I discovered music and built lifelong friendships. These programs changed my life. I’ve worked with the TDSB for years teaching music clinics and connecting with kids of all ages, and I know firsthand how vital these programs are. Exploring the immersive recording of the Bass Veena for the IMMERSED album. 🎧 IMMERSED Pre-save + Blu-ray Pre-order: 🔗 in Bio ⬆️ The Bass Veena is an instrument I invented, and was built by my dear friend, master luthier Les Godfrey. Bass Veena is a hybrid fretless bass inspired by Indian instruments. It features a 10-string harp, with four playing strings and two drone (chikari) strings tuned to the upper tonic. I use @daddarioandco strings on all my instruments. It is a hybrid electronic & acoustic in design, built to be amplified. There is a piezo pickup under the bridge (functioning like a contact mic), a separate piezo pickup on the harp, and a magnetic pickup. Each has its own output and no onboard summing or electronics. For this session, I connected my two main piezo outputs to a @radialengineering PZ-Pro, which allows me to EQ and level each signal before summing. From there, the signal went through my pedalboard (featuring mainly Source Audio pedals). The last pedal is a @sourceaudio Ventris for stereo reverb. The stereo signal was recorded through two Radial JDI boxes. Additionally, I put the magnetic pickup into the Radial HDI. In the mix, we blended the stereo Ventris output into the Left and Right speakers and the dry pickup in the center channel. The most inspiring part of the session was capturing the instrument with immersive intent in the room. I fed two of my @markbass_official amps with the stereo signal. - DVMark AC 101 - 12" Markbass NY 121 cab with Nanomark head We mic’d the amps with a pair of Neumann U67s and captured the room using an 11-channel Schoeps 7.0.4 cardioid immersive array (the Gray Array). The result gave a sense of being in the room with the instrument, not just hearing a close or direct capture. For monitoring, I switched from my usual Audeze Euclid closed-backs to Audeze LCDi4 semi-open IEMs, which let me hear not just the direct sound, but also the amps, room, and transients in real-time — making it much easier to play dynamically and in tune.
