Deirdre Jacob was 18 years old when she disappeared from Newbridge, Kildare, Ireland on Tuesday July 28th 1998. She had been living in London while she studied teaching but was home for the Summer after having completed her first year there. At 12pm she walked from the family home into Newbridge and visited her Grandmother's shop. At midday she went to the bank in Newbridge and then to the post office - she needed a bank draft so that she could send a rent deposit to her friend in London. She then returned to her Grandmother's shop before heading home again via the Barrettstown road. The last sighting of Deirdre was between 3-3.30pm at the gate to her home. There are a further two unconfirmed sightings of her at a café on Tara Street, Dublin on the 30th and 31st of July, but as far as we can confirm, that moment by the gate was the last time anyone saw Deirdre. When Deirdre's mother returned home, the house was locked and Deirdre was not home. The process of calling friends began and a Garda search for her began that night, but no trace of Deirdre was found. A number of young women went missing in the east of Ireland in the 1990's and this became known as "Ireland's Vanishing Triangle." These disappearances are often discussed in the media as being committed by the same unidentified serial k*ler. These women are Annie McCarrick aged 26 disappeared on March 26th 1993. She was an American woman living in Dublin who was last seen in Enniskerry Co. Wicklow and there were unconfirmed sightings of her in Glencullen Co. Dublin with an unidentified man. A former Garda has claimed that a former IRA member is or was a suspect in her disappearance. * Josephine "JoJo" Dullard aged 21 disappeared on November 9th 1995. JoJo was hitchhiking home from Dublin to her home in Callan Co. Kilkenny and was last seen at a payphone in Moone Co. Kildare. There was an unconfirmed sighting of her in Castledermot Co. Kildare. * Fiona Pender aged 25 disappeared on August 23rd 1996. Fiona was seven months pregnant at the time of her disappearance. She left her apartment on Church street Tullamore Co. Offaly and was never seen again. A cross with her name was found on the Slieve Bloom Way in 2008. As recently as 2017 Gardaí have a suspect and a motive in Fiona's disappearance. * Ciara Breen aged 17 disappeared on February 13th 1997. Ciara Breen was last seen by her mother who later discovered her missing at 2am. The window had been left open, presumably Ciara had sneaked out and left it open so she could sneak back inside. She was never seen again. A suspect was arrested in connection with her disappearance in 1999 and again in 2015 but was released without charge. In 2017 he passed away of in Garda custody after being arrested for driving offences. In 2000 Larry Murphy abducted a young woman from a carpark in Carlow. She was only saved because two people discovered the scene and happened to recognise Larry Murphy. He was sentenced to 15 years and only served 10½ years. Throughout his prison stay, he never showed any remorse and did not engage in treatment while there. When Deirdre's grandmother passed, a chequebook stub with Larry Murphy's name and number were found in her possession. Deirdre's family believe it was written down when Larry called into the shop inquiring about the possibility of selling wooden children's toys he made there. Larry has been questioned about her disappearnce and according to a fellow prisoner, Larry once confessed. However it is worth mentioning that Deirdre's family believe there are more suspects in her disappearance, and focussing on Larry Murphy exclusively damages the investigation as the link isn't strong and they don't want people to focus only on him.
