At the end of 2023 I got sick. I’d just turned 30, bought a flat and was about to start a new job. I felt truly happy, ready for this new decade of my life. But seemingly out of nowhere my body gave up on me. I had developed what I now know was ME/CFS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis / Chronic Fatigue Syndrome), of which western medicine tells you there is no cure and only 5% of people recover. Over the course of last year I visited 12 different hospitals with debilitating symptoms, but after tonnes of tests I am still yet to recieve any help from the NHS. My story is not unique. The state of care for ME/CFS patients is shocking. I am one of the lucky ones that now has enough energy to even talk about my experince. So many are bed bound reliant on round the clock care from carers unable to fight for themselves. Being chronically ill should not be normalised and accepted by medicine. just because there isn’t a magic pill made by the pharmaceutical industry shouldn’t sign people up to a lifetime of pain. Illness doesnt just come out of thin air, western medicine ignores the mind body connection. I now believe there is always an underlying reason someone gets chronically sick, and at the route is dysregulation. For me, I have been discovering that years of burnout, buried trauma, undiagnosed symptoms and general neglect for my wellbeing, finally pushed my body to breaking point. This illness was waiting for me and I didn’t even know it. I am now 18 months into this journey. My whole life has fallen apart, I have lost my job, friends and any idea of what my life is going to look like. But I have so much hope, for me and others. Healing is possible. Just because western medicine doesn’t have the answers doesn’t mean there isn’t one. I have started to heal old wounds, I am discovering so much about myself and have so much gratitude for my life. I am finally started to see progress and am focusing on the small wins. I have learned so much that I wish the old me knew.
