Alright time for the Agnes update you've been waiting for. She's got a cookie and is ready to let me sit here and type. The tl/dr is basically that her skin is like 80% better and we are not longer shaving our beaver. Yay! Celebrate! Send her cookies! Or funds for cookies! But actually not cookies because you already sent sooo much food. Anyway, Agnes was on oral antifungals for her skin back in April. I stopped them in early May because they make me nervous, but that was definitely premature because her fungal skin infection came back and nothing topical was stopping it. By the beginning of June I accepted that she needed to be back on oral antifungals and she has been since then. Even a healthy beaver in the wild has such a weak immune system that they can be considered immunocompromised and as you all know Agnes was far from healthy when she came in. Her skin is like 80% better between oral and topical meds. You can see that the crust around her eyes has finally eased up and she can open them nice and wide now. Her fur is growing back in too which is great. Last November when we took her in I was expecting that it would take until September 2025 for her to have a healthy coat. I wasn't that far off but I think we still have a few months to go. She's also symptomatic for giardia like baby Cassian. Beavers tend to carry giardia as it's one of the most common waterborne parasites out there but don't tend to get symptoms from it. Unfortunately Cassian and Agnes have weaker immune systems than even normal beavers so we have to treat them for giardia. Also unfortunately albendazole (the more effective medication option) is on a manufacturer backorder so we are muddling through with combination of less effective meds until we can manage to get it shipped from a compounding pharmacy. All in all things are going well but beavers are complex expensive patients and they take a lot of work to get healthy when they have less than ideal reasons for intake into rehabs.
