Hearing The Call Coatzacoalcos México Humanitarian Trip August 2025 Clinic Day 2 We are ready for clinic today. 65 patients on the roster, once again. The day starts off slowly, with patients seen sporadically from the Bimbo bakery factories. We are given access to their wonder doctor and nurse, who care for patients needing earwax removal. We take the slowing of the morning schedule to train up more of the volunteers. They are taught to screen and run tests with our guidance and supervision. They take on making earmolds and sanitizing equipment. They help with fittings. The more they grow into our skill sets, the faster we are able to mobilize patients through the various stations: otoscopy, earwax removal, tjmpanometry, otoacoustoc emissions screenings, audiometry, earmold impressions, real ear testing, hearing aid fitting, care and use. One of the volunteers is my 16 year old son. We started out together on the first day and I see less and less of him over the course of the clinic days. At some point in the day, we end up back on the same station. As I start to explain to him how to run a pure tone test, he turns and says “yeah, I already leaned how to do that,” and proceeds to do it. I smile quietly as I sit next to him. I find out later that he managed to get trained on many if not all the stations. One of Hearing The Call’s goals is relief. The other and more valuable goal is sustainability. Relief meets the emergent need, but sustainability is the long term game. Training local technicians on site allows for greater impact, as hearing healthcare is most effective with ongoing care. The sheer volume of patients over our clinic days while in Coatzacoalcos is grueling but also allows us to train local volunteers to continue the work of Hearing The Call and it is everything. We end the day sweaty and tired. Too tired to go further than the restaurant around the corner from our hotel for dinner. We learn that they’ve put together dinner together on the house for us. The town is small and word travels fast. We experience this gesture of kindness and hospitality from people of the town and the Integra AC family daily. It makes our stay feel like home.
