Hearing The Call Coatzacoalcos México Humanitarian Trip August 2025 One of my favorite moments of the day was watching Mario listen for the sounds of this makeshift rattle after having his new hearing aids programmed. I think it’s watching his curiosity and wonder that did it for me. This little boy stole my heart. Mario is profoundly deaf in both ears. He has been wearing hearing aids for a year now (from last year’s clinic). He wears them for awareness of sound, not intelligibility. When he came back this year for a follow up, we discovered they were no longer working and the earmolds were poorly fitting. He was one of our first patients of the day, and ended up being our last patient of the day when we realized he needed new earmolds and new hearing aids. We had so many technical issues with the fire in the clinic’s electrical system, that it took *seven hours* to get his ears evaluated, wax removed, earmolds made, and refitted with new hearing aids. And Mario smiled through it the whole time. It is the spirit and heart of these kids and their families that draws the team to this location and its people. It keeps us coming back for more.
