Day 1: Clinic setup and half day seeing patients We are slated to see 200+ patients over the course of 3.5 clinic days. There are 5 audiologists, 2 audiology students, and several volunteers and translators there to support us. We are outnumbered but resolved to work as efficiently as possible. Our host, Integra, have patients lined up and waiting to be seen while we setup hearing testing and hearing aid fitting equipment. Many kids previously fit with hearing aids are returning for a recheck of their ears, hearing, and hearing aids. Their hearing losses are severe and in need of audiologic care. They reside in places that have little to no access to hearing healthcare. Halfway through the day, we were on fire. Literally. I am in the middle of retubing a young man’s earmolds when we lose power entirely. The building’s electric system overloaded and caught fire. It takes out our electric entirely. Very quickly, we setup camera lighting in dark rooms, finish whatever visits we can (in no AC, 100% Mexico humidity). We regroup on next steps. What to do? We have a roster of 25-30 patients waiting to be seen. Integra’s founders Ivan and Monica volunteer their home for clinic while they try to figure out how to get electric repaired. We stop for lunch, pack up, and walk a few blocks to their home with equipment in tow. After unpacking and setting up in various rooms, we plug away at seeing the rest of the roster. There are kids and parents sitting everywhere…in living rooms, in the kitchen, on beds in random bedrooms. The house is bustling with patients, providers, and volunteers. We wrap up with our final patient at 6:30pm, and walk out to our bus, sweat soaked but satisfied. Somehow, we manage to get through a seemingly impossible first day. I am blown away by how generous our hosts are, offering their home for clinic. At some point, there are at least 50 people in and around their home! I am amazed at how our team leads (Vanessa and Suha) keep their cool (no pun intended) and quickly pivot to a new game plan. I marvel at how patients and their parents sat so quietly and patiently through what turned out to be a *7 hour* audiologic visit, still smiling when we call their name. By the time we have dinner, it is close to 7:45pm. We reflect on the day together and share reflections of gratitude. Someone mentions that their favorite humanitarian trips are the most challenging ones. My body aches but I couldn’t agree more..
