The notion that mind and body are separate in medicine is firmly entrenched, and doctors are as responsible as anyone for this, but it is very unhelpful. In my experience as a GP it bears very little resemblance to reality. And the prejudice that we are all prone to where we place a higher value on an illness that is perceived to be physical over one that is perceived to be mental is both damaging and unfair. The way the mind and body work together is at the heart of the difference between illness and disease. Two people can have the same disease and yet a very different illness experience, which will be affected by how their mind and body interact, their socioeconomic context access to care and so on. When we force this artificial separation of mind and body we limit our ability to care for people. It is like trying to practice medicine with one hand tied behind your back. This post is not specifically about chronic fatigue syndrome, or the quality of the research about abnormalities in the blood in patients with CFS, which is an interesting and important finding. But for a condition as complex as CFS, which may affect sufferers for months and years, if we restrict ourselves to thinking of it solely as an illness in the body or the mind then we do a grave disservice to those affected. The fragmentation of medicine into specialities must not stop us seeing people as whole people, with both minds and bodies!
