Our apple tree proved to be the perfect metaphor for burnout! It is a strong tree, but was carrying too heavy a load of apples and, as so often happens with burnout, we didn’t have the time to thin it out and - if we are entirely honest - we didn’t want to let go of all those lovely apples! 🍎🍏 And then, as is so common in burnout, it just fell over one day. There was no prior warning that it was about to do that, it just reached a tipping point, and then it was too late to do anything about it, we had no chance of standing it up again! And then it showed us it’s last, powerful, lesson - that sometimes, with burnout, there is no substitute for time. As the summer went on and we picked some apples and others fell off, it actually started to lift itself, little by little, off the ground. And by the end of the season, relieved of the weight of all the apples and with a bit of careful pruning, what has seemed like an impossible task became really straightforward and we lifted it back up with ease. And now it’s is thriving once again! If burnout came upon you seemingly overnight, be reassured that this is how it usually happens. If you didn’t spot the signs in time, you’re not alone in that. And if it feels like you are lying flat on the floor with no idea how you will ever get up again, then that is normal too! Hang in there!
