Back in 2023, Barton Springs lost an important landmark: Flo, the beloved pecan tree who shaded the pool for more than a century. Flo was a historic part of the springs, instantly recognizable for her peculiar lean over the pool. She stood out to visitors as a funky and resilient presence, a reminder of what makes Barton so special. Flo appears in photographs as early as the 1920s, and by 1940, the city had even placed a concrete base to keep her upright. In June of 2023, a strange fungus was discovered at her base. By August, results confirmed it was brittle cinder fungus, an untreatable disease that weakens even healthy-looking trees. For safety reasons, the city made the difficult decision to remove Flo. On October 4, 2023, the community gathered for a Celebration of Life, sharing stories, songs, and memories of this iconic tree, before she was removed the following day. It’s sad to see such a special piece of Barton’s history gone, but beautiful to witness the impact Flo had on generations of swimmers and visitors. Do you remember Flo?
