We’re excited to share one of the first big updates from the Barton Springs Bathhouse rehabilitation. Local artist Lys Santamaria created a beautiful new mosaic that now greets visitors as they head toward the Springs. Called Entre Agua y Estrellas (Between Water and Stars), the piece was inspired by the plants, animals, and people that make this place so special. From the very beginning, Lys held one idea close: water is for everyone. There’s so much intention packed into this piece. The animals appear larger than the people to remind us of our true scale in nature. The stars above the Springs are reflected in the artwork too, referencing how constellations align with the geography beneath our feet. At the center of the mosaic is a burst of light. It represents joy, healing, and the full spectrum of what makes us human. Lys worked with two fabricators: Helios Glass Studio in Austin and Amanda E. Mosaics in California. Every detail was hand-drawn, researched, and created with care. To support and see more of Lys' work, please follow her @lys.artist. The bathhouse is still under construction, but we’re already so excited for this piece to be a part of the space. More updates coming soon! #ForTheLoveOfTheSprings #BartonSpringsConservancy #VolunteerAustin #BartonSprings #AustinTX #KeepAustinBeautiful #TexasNature #AustinParksFoundation #SaveOurSprings #BartonSpringsRefugee #ElizaSprings #AustinWildlife #SalamanderConservation #ProtectEndangeredSpecies #AustinNatureLovers #WatershedProtection #EcoAustin #ConservationMatters #WildlifeResearch #NaturePreservation #BartonSpringsEcosystem #AustinVolunteers #TexasWildlife
Take a first look at the rehabilitation underway for the Joan Means Khabele Bathhouse at Barton Springs Pool. Construction has been underway since last February and has made some impressive progress. While it may look finished, a lot of final work still remains, including plumbing commissioning, lighting controls, security and data completion, HVAC commissioning, and installation of the new educational exhibits.   One of the most notable changes is the increase in visitor education and accessibility the bathhouse will offer. With the main pool entrance at the rotunda, visitors will pass through the new education exhibit space which will help promote awareness and foster stewardship of Barton Springs and the Edwards Aquifer.  As Luci Johnson once noted, “It’s fun to go somewhere and accidentally learn something.”  And with many more ADA-compliant features, it’s becoming a more welcoming place for all. To help with long lines and big crowds, there will be three bathhouse entrances and also multiple emergency exits for visitor safety. A significant challenge for the project is that the bathhouse is a City of Austin Landmark, a State Antiquities Landmark, and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, so all changes and updates had to be very intentional and thoughtful.  Since this is a rehabilitation rather than a renovation, the original structure of the bathhouse was preserved and honored throughout the process, while thoughtfully updating it to meet today’s needs. Even the small details were retained, like the yellow bricks seen throughout the changing rooms. Any of those that could be salvaged were, and the rest were replaced with carefully sourced matching bricks. Another exciting feature is the floor mosaic created by local artist Lys Santamaria. Through her art, she honored the beauty and nature of the Springs and emphasized that this is a place for everyone. There’s still more to come, but we’re loving the progress so far and are excited to share more as the anticipated Fall opening day gets closer and the bathhouse to be open for all!  Stay tuned! #ForTheLoveOfTheSprings #BartonSpringsConservancy #VolunteerAustin #BartonSprings #AustinTX #KeepAustinBeautiful #TexasNature #AustinParksFoundation #SaveOurSprings #BartonSpringsRefugee #ElizaSprings #AustinWildlife #SalamanderConservation #ProtectEndangeredSpecies #AustinNatureLovers #WatershedProtection #EcoAustin #ConservationMatters #WildlifeResearch #NaturePreservation #BartonSpringsEcosystem #AustinVolunteers #TexasWildlife
It’s Throwback Thursday! Thanks to our friends at @texasarchive for the amazing vintage footage. A lot has changed since this 1955 video of Barton Springs. For one, we don’t use mercury in our thermometers anymore. We also don’t currently have the impressive 27 million gallon a day flow rate in the springs due to an ongoing drought.  #ThrowbackThursday #ForTheLoveOfTheSprings #BartonSpringsConservancy #VolunteerAustin #BartonSprings #AustinTX #KeepAustinBeautiful #TexasNature #AustinParksFoundation #SaveOurSprings #BartonSpringsRefugee #ElizaSprings #AustinWildlife #SalamanderConservation #ProtectEndangeredSpecies #AustinNatureLovers #WatershedProtection #EcoAustin #ConservationMatters #WildlifeResearch #NaturePreservation #BartonSpringsEcosystem #AustinVolunteers #TexasWildlife
Ever wondered why Barton Springs is closed on Thursdays? It’s cleaning day! Volunteers work hard to keep the springs clean and beautiful for all to enjoy. Huge thanks to everyone helping protect this Austin treasure. #ForTheLoveofTheSprings #FriendsofBartonSprings #BartonSprings #AustinTX #VolunteerAustin #PoolCleaningDay #KeepAustinBeautiful #EcoAustin #TexasNature
This moment of calm is brought to you by the Barton Springs Conservancy and the place we all love, Barton. We hope it helps you slow down and soak in the moment. #ForTheLoveOfTheSprings #BartonSpringsConservancy #VolunteerAustin #BartonSprings #AustinTX
Barton Springs has a way of sparking creativity, and @Jake Pitts captured that magic perfectly. While soaking in the scene poolside, he brought this stunning live painting to life. His work reflects the energy, beauty, and spirit of the Springs, and visitors even got to watch the process unfold in real time. Jake shares more of his live-painted landscapes over on YouTube (Jakes_epic_art), and this piece is still up for grabs if you’re looking to own a one-of-a-kind tribute to a place we all hold dear. Have you ever been inspired by Barton Springs? We’d love to see what you’ve created! #ForTheLoveOfTheSprings #BartonSpringsConservancy #VolunteerAustin #BartonSprings #AustinTX #KeepAustinBeautiful #TexasNature #AustinParksFoundation #SaveOurSprings #BartonSpringsRefugee #ElizaSprings #AustinWildlife #SalamanderConservation #ProtectEndangeredSpecies #AustinNatureLovers #WatershedProtection #EcoAustin #ConservationMatters #WildlifeResearch #NaturePreservation #BartonSpringsEcosystem #AustinVolunteers #TexasWildlife
You may have noticed the small spring tucked just to the side of Barton Springs Pool. That’s Eliza Spring, an often-overlooked landmark with a rich history.
Originally constructed in 1903 by Andrew Zilker, the spring was designed as an oval-shaped amphitheater and served as a gathering space for his Elks Lodge. At the time, spring water flowed through a narrow concrete slot, open to the air, before continuing on to the creek.
Over the years, modifications such as a taller retaining wall, a concrete floor over the spring, and a 24-foot underground pipe to contain the spring run changed both its form and function.
In 1990, it was discovered to be critical habitat for two species of the endangered salamander: the Barton Springs Salamander (Eurycea sosorum) and the Austin Blind Salamander (Eurycea waterlooensis). In 2017, aiming to improve the spring flow to support the salamanders, a major rehabilitation project set out to restore Eliza Spring. The spring run was "daylighted," the concrete floor removed, and native stonework reintroduced. These efforts brought the site closer to Zilker’s original vision while protecting the delicate ecosystem that now thrives here. The updated design also makes it easier for biologists to monitor salamander populations and gives the public a chance to view their habitat.
 Eliza Spring is a small but meaningful part of Barton Springs. It's where history, restoration, and wildlife come together. Check it out next time you're at the pool, and don’t forget to follow us for more about the springs. #ForTheLoveOfTheSprings #BartonSpringsConservancy #VolunteerAustin #BartonSprings #AustinTX #KeepAustinBeautiful #TexasNature #AustinParksFoundation #SaveOurSprings #BartonSpringsRefugee #ElizaSprings #AustinWildlife #SalamanderConservation #ProtectEndangeredSpecies #AustinNatureLovers #WatershedProtection #EcoAustin #ConservationMatters #WildlifeResearch #NaturePreservation #BartonSpringsEcosystem #AustinVolunteers #TexasWildlife
