About Meet Joan Means Khabele, a Mp3 Sound Effect
Meet Joan Means Khabele, a courageous figure in Austin’s history. As a student at Austin High during the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Joan was told she and other Black classmates couldn’t attend their 1960 senior picnic at Zilker and Barton Springs because the pool was still segregated. In response, she and her friends began a petition, gathered signatures, and went to the City Council to fight the discriminatory law. When the Council didn’t act, she helped organize swim-ins where Black students entered the pool in peaceful protest. Thanks in part to her leadership, Barton Springs was eventually desegregated in 1962. Today, her legacy is being honored as the newly renovated bathhouse at Barton Springs will be named after Joan Means Khabele.
