I used to show up to triathlons with the intention of not being seen. I’d rack my bike, set up my transition area, and try to disappear. I didn’t feel like I deserved to be in the space, so I tried to avoid…everyone. I started doing these relays to bring people to triathlon, but it’s also been for me. Through relaying I’ve learned some incredible things. Last year, my team at this same race encouraged me to talk to people on the beach before the swim. So this year, I went into that wait before the water - much more open. I loved connecting with first time triathletes and meeting people from my community here. 🤍 I found the confidence to reach out to other triathletes & coaches I’ve connected with this year on race day, and it reminded me that this space is for me too. My team this year was incredible and taught me a couple things. @aconn48 taught me that you can be an athlete & the ultimate cheerleader in the same breath. @blondishinchicago reminded me that it’s okay to change your mind. That sounds like a simple premise, but so often we get stuck in our old thoughts that we never break free. We can do hard things. Shoutout to race director @kathrynarenner and @jcprdparks for supporting my dream of sharing triathlon. And for putting on a great race while keeping everyone safe.
