At one point, Martin is heard saying, “I’m fixin’ to kill her.” By 5 a.m. on June 17, first responders found Jamaria unresponsive at the Harbor Oaks Drive home. They noted extensive injuries—abrasions, bruises, possible bite marks, burns—at various stages of healing. The autopsy ruled homicide: complications of multiple blunt-force injuries and a thermal injury to her right foot. Detectives documented punishments that included prolonged wall sits, running in place with arms raised, being struck with objects and pinched, and scalding from boiling water used during hair “discipline.” On Aug. 28, 2024, deputies arrested Martin on charges of first-degree murder, aggravated child abuse, and child neglect; two days later, Sessions was arrested for aggravated manslaughter. Both were held without bond. A grand jury indicted Martin on Sept. 24, and on Oct. 8 prosecutors filed notice to seek the death penalty, citing factors including the victim’s age, custodial authority, and the crime’s heinous and calculated nature. Martin pleaded not guilty and was ordered to avoid contact with Jamaria’s next of kin. She remains jailed awaiting trial. In 2025, authorities released interrogation footage where Martin told detectives she used “scare tactics” and insisted, “I didn’t kill her.” Officials also acknowledged a missed welfare-check request months before the death, and a sheriff’s sergeant was later demoted.
