Chen pretended to be a frightened, confused mother, claiming she had no knowledge of what happened, hiding the truth behind rehearsed fear. Detectives quickly uncovered the inconsistencies. Security footage showed Ashley never leaving, and the parents’ story fell apart. When confronted, Zhao admitted hiding the body, and Chen confessed she had beaten Ashley until she collapsed and had watched her die, pretending afterward she knew nothing. Both parents were charged.
