Dubbed the “Superstar of Electone”, Sekitō used the Yamaha EX-42 Electone to make the Special Sound Series(華麗なるエレクトーン). The EX-42 was Yamaha’s flagship synthesizer/organ precursor to the ultra rare GX-1. Built from 1970 until 1977, it launched in 1970 in Japan for ¥2,800,000. In the US, it had a $32,000 price tag, which is roughly $271,572.49 today adjusted for inflation! According to online sources, it’s likely that less than 200 of these were ever built. It stands 45” high x 60” wide x 32” deep and nearly 500 lbs. Mac DeMarco’s melody for “Chamber of Reflection” off Salad Says were chords interpolated from Sekitō’s,The Word II, reworked with vintage synths, the lead in particular being Mac’s Roland JX-3P. Sekitō studied piano as a child and aspired to become a composer, studying composition at Osaka Kyouiku University. He won the first prize at the National Electone Competition in 1967, and was one of the leading figures in the world of the Electone, while teaching younger students. He also performed and composed music on the piano under the name of Ken Akishino (秋篠健) and published some of his works on his YouTube channel before passing away in 2021.
