Faces of Ghana Music 🇬🇭✨ Emmanuel Kofi Nyame, known as E.K. Nyame (1927–1977), was a pioneering Ghanaian musician, composer, and guitarist, revered as one of the “godfathers” of modern highlife music. His self-taught guitar skills, inspired by Appiah Agyekum, led him to join Agyekum’s band in 1947 before forming his own, E.K.’s Band, in 1949. By rejecting Western ballroom influences like foxtrots and quicksteps, E.K Nyame africanized the concert party, incorporating local rhythms, Akan language lyrics, and socially conscious themes. He also introduced jazz and Latin percussion elements, enriching highlife’s sound. His support for Ghana’s independence movement through songs and plays made him a favorite of President Kwame Nkrumah, whom he accompanied on state visits, such as to Liberia in 1952. By 1975, he had recorded approximately 400 singles for labels like Decca, Queenophone, and His Master’s Voice, spreading highlife’s popularity across West Africa. While E.
