About Out of the 15 essays Mp3 Sound Effect
Out of the 15 essays we’ve published so far this year, these are my favourite. If you want to read them, the link is in my bio. The Scholarly Letter was founded because we wanted a place to discuss the complexities and nuances of research, academia and knowledge. Social media is useful, sure, but it is fleeting. For how long can a 2 minute video stay relevant on platforms like TikTok? More than that, how could we possibly think deeply in less than 2 minutes? No, we wanted, needed, a space where our ideas could move and our thoughts could breathe. Initially, we simply wrote emails to each other. There were no character limits and they could wait patiently in the inbox until we had the time to engage with them meaningfully. Scholarship should not always be a solitary affair. While it’s a romantic idea to be working away at one’s desk alone with our thoughts, community is an essential part of research. To be surrounded by others who, like you, are thinking, composing and questioning is nourishing for the soul. It is why we are drawn to conferences, journal clubs and workshops. The desire to connect with other scholars and think together is also what led to the formation of the Republic of Letters in the 16th century. The Republic of Letters was a virtual, global community of intellectuals in the 17th and 18th centuries who kept the lifeblood of ideas flowing through one key medium: the letter. Long before the internet, scholars, scientists, and philosophers debated, criticised, and shared their thinking by post. This metaphysical republic of ideas was built entirely on letters: lots of them. That spirit animates The Scholarly Letter. What we send aren’t letters in the traditional sense: we know they’re emails. But the intention is the same: to explore the ideas, debates, and questions that matter to scholars. And maybe, we preserve a little of the slowness and intentionality of the post, in contrast to the evanescence of tweets and algorithmic scrolls (oh the irony of posting this to TikTok!). If you’d like to receive these letters, dear Scholar, why not join the community? We would be absolutely delighted to receive a letter from you. We don’t do ads and we don’t do paywalls.
