I fell far down the rabbit hole on this one guys. In January, I started looking into how Scihub had funded themselves for an essay in The Scholarly Letter. It’s a weekly newsletter I co-founded and edit and basically my main project right now. What I found really surprised me: Scihub was using cryptocurrency to finance its operations. Digging a little deeper, I saw that it had also created its own crypto token and that there were other organizations which were trying to establish themselves using crypto as their main form of funding. I had stumbled across the Decentralized Science Movement - a super interesting microcosm of the research community, who believe that funding science with crypto is not only possible, it will make science better. Naturally I was intrigued af, how could I not be? So I wrote the essay for the newsletter and now I’m making it into a video essay for TikTok, because how else do you draw attention to something you’ve written in the doom-scrolling age?
