About The name "sand creeper" refers Mp3 Sound Effect

The name "sand creeper" refers to Arenaerpeton supinatus, a 240-million-year-old giant amphibian whose fossil was discovered by chance in a backyard retaining wall in New South Wales, Australia. The specimen, formally described in 2023, is exceptionally well-preserved and has been recognized as a significant find in Australian paleontological history.  The discovery: In the 1990s, a retired chicken farmer named Mihail Mihaildis was building a garden retaining wall using sandstone slabs from a quarry near Sydney. While hosing dirt off the rocks, he discovered the complete, fossilized body of a creature on one of the slabs. He donated the fossil to the Australian Museum in Sydney, where it remained in storage for decades before being officially studied.  Paleontological history: Identification: Paleontologist Lachlan Hart, who first saw the fossil as a 12-year-old museum visitor, formally identified the creature as a new species for his PhD research. The name Arenaerpeton supinatus translates from Latin to "supine sand creeper," referring to its position on its back in the sandstone. Species: Arenaerpeton supinatus was a large, predatory temnospondyl, an ancient order of carnivorous amphibians that lived before and during the time of the dinosaurs. The fossil is remarkably complete, preserving most of the skeleton and the rare outlines of its soft tissue, including its skin and fat. Appearance and lifestyle: Estimated at about 1.2 meters (nearly 4 feet) long, the amphibian resembled a stout, heavyset version of the modern Chinese Giant Salamander. It possessed "gnarly teeth" and tusk-like fangs on the roof of its mouth to ambush and shred its aquatic prey, such as ancient fish. It inhabited freshwater rivers and waterways that flowed through the Sydney Basin during the Triassic period.  Significance of the find: The fossil provides crucial information about the recovery period following the Permian mass extinction, which occurred just millions of years before Arenaerpeton lived. Its large size for an early Triassic temnospondyl suggests that Australia was a favorable environment for animals to thrive and grow during this time. The discovery demonstrates that even common building materials can contain historically significant secrets, proving the value of community-led fossil preservation.  #ancienthistory #ancient #discover #fossil #travel
