About So I just finished by Mp3 Sound Effect
So I just finished by submissions for the Indie Film Music Contest, and I figured this would be a good time to breakdown some of the music. Before I started scoring, I wrote a brief summary of the film after watching it for the first time, something I learnt from the film scoring course the Indie Film Music Contest (IFMC) offers. “When a bear escapes from the zoo and impersonates an office worker, the zookeeper must catch the bear before he can cause too much damage, but the bear escapes from the zookeeper and runs into the wild.” Wild premise yes, but also very silly when you think about it, and looking at the art style and animation, it doesn't feel like the film takes itself too seriously. So knowing that, I wanted the music for this scene to reflect that unserious nature, but also mirror those chaotic feelings of rushing to get somewhere when you're late that I'm sure we're all familiar with. In my score for this scene I used a lot of syncopated rhythms and simple repetition to give the music a playful feeling, as well as bits of chromaticism in the melody. The drums were fast paced with lots of fills and functioned as the driving beat of the piece. When the car began to swerve I wanted to mirror that feeling of unease and tension in the music with that flowing chromatic line in the flutes, and I took the same approach when the car was going up the ramp and into the traffic jam. Scoring these kinds of animations has always been challenging to me, but I really loved what I came up with for this scene and wanted to share.
