#nativeamericans #firstnations #nativetiktok #indigenous #indiancounty #americanindian #sovereignty #turtleisland #IndigenousTikTok What does revoking birthright citizenship mean for Native Americans? You may have heard that birthright citizenship is being challenged for Native Americans. But what does that really mean? Let’s break it down. The executive order being proposed would require Native Americans to relinquish their nation and swear sole allegiance to the U.S. to retain their citizenship. This challenges a long-standing law that allowed citizenship without renouncing tribal sovereignty—a principle foundational to Native nations. But here’s the issue: What happens if they don’t? Native Americans have no other homeland. The choice being presented feels like a direct attack on sovereignty and self-identity. This isn’t happening in a vacuum. The current president has publicly admired Andrew Jackson—the very president responsible for the Trail of Tears and policies that displaced and devastated Native nations. And now, history feels like it’s repeating itself So what can you do? Stay informed. Talk to your tribal leadership. Educate yourself and your community on the challenges ahead. Together, we can stand strong in the face of these attacks on sovereignty. Before I close, let’s take a moment to reflect on what this could mean for Canadian First Nations. The current president of the United States has repeatedly suggested he wants Canada to become the 51st state. For many, this rhetoric seemed impossible—a political fantasy. But given the recent actions in the U.S., especially against Native sovereignty, it’s not such a far-fetched idea anymore. If such a scenario were to unfold, what would that mean for our sovereignty as Indigenous peoples here in Canada? Would we face similar choices and challenges? It’s time for us to take this rhetoric seriously. Our leadership needs to start thinking about contingencies to ensure our sovereignty is protected, no matter what happens south of the border.
