I started running in 2007 & quickly made it a habit to get up, walk my dogs, and take myself for a run. This was my way of clearing the cobwebs, the inner chatter, and my monkey mind. I was grateful for this practice when I started my agency in 2009 as it allowed me to stay balanced and gave me an outlet, especially when I had a running buddy. Fast forward to 2017 as I began walking a more spiritual path, I found that running was keeping me in fight or flight and as much as it helped calm the voices, it wasn’t shifting them. Running had become a crutch, not a support. And as much as I wanted to keep this practice, I was honestly just punishing myself for not being able to keep my mind clear. My body became very unhappy with me, so I slowly stopped running altogether. Last August, while on vacation, I found myself sitting on a lake enjoying the quiet morning alone and began to read The Artist’s Way. Julia Cameron shared about her practice of Morning Pages & I felt like I had finally found my next step. What’s funny is that I had been teaching this practice for years without knowing its origin, yet I was really on & off with journaling. I loved writing, but didn’t have a consistent practice. Since that morning, I’ve only missed a few days her & there. Today is day 464 - it’s become a part of my daily ritual. This practice of writing whatever is on my mind has opened up more of myself than any other habit or ritual I’ve ever had. And it’s given me clarity on the voices in my head—most of which were sabotaging my momentum.
