This morning, in a fascinating display of precocious imagination, Miko came running into the kitchen slamming shut the doors and exclaiming, “Keep monsters out!” The twins went 👀👀 and Miko said, “Monsters are coming! Keep monsters out!” Now Miko was laughing, thinking this was a game. But Conall LOST it. He ran to Jess screaming, demanding to be picked up off the ground so the monsters couldn’t get him. This made Arden flip out, and he also ran to Jess screaming. Jess tried to console them, but this was made difficult by Miko thinking this was a fun twist to the game and continuing to shout, “Monsters!” and slam doors, which made the twins scream all the more. Finally Jess got Miko to understand (and care) that the monster game was really scaring his brothers, and we needed to stop so they could feel “safe”. Miko switched gears and began assuring them, “No monsters coming.” The twins couldn’t calm down though and kept clutching Jess and screaming in her ear until in desperation she told them that monsters can’t get babies when they’re safe in a stroller, and ushered them outside. Finally, the fresh air and the sun chased the monstrous fears away. When I heard about this occurrence, I was fascinated. We have read books about monsters, so it’s not a new word, but monsters have been discussed in a more mythological context— not in the context of scaring kids. Miko’s game feels very advanced—& the twins being scared of monsters also feels advanced. I’m intrigued to see where else we go with the development of our fears, as it’s a clear sign of imagination and creativity.
