I was not a gentle parent yesterday. I was not a calmly-regulated parent, or a Montessori parent, or a patient parent. I was just a parent. The kids cried and whined and hit each other ALL DAY. They screamed for a boob and they screamed when someone else got a boob and they screamed when the boob stopped. They demanded to be held and then screamed by my ear; they refused to give each other space but also refused to stop hitting; and they threw their cups on the floor and their plates across the room and dirt in their eyeballs and then Screamed and Screamed and Screamed. I lived in my noise-cancelling headphones. I said, “I’m sorry I said/did that; I’m feeling very crabby and my ears are hurting from all the loud noises” more than once. Jess and I traded on and off most of the day so we could get as many tiny breaks as possible to help our own nervous systems. Why were they so fussy? Sometimes with toddlers—who knows! The twins are cutting more teeth. Toddlerhood is full of big emotions and big milestones. They’re all been crabby high-maintenance kids once they were exposed to lead, and that hasn’t gone away yet. Maybe they just miss their dad, who’s been working a ton the last couple weeks. Maybe they just feel Really, Really Safe with me and Jess and they had a lot of feelings to let out. (….yay.) It is HARD to be a toddler parent. It is thrice as hard to be a triplet toddler parent. I really try to be a gentle parent, who gives choices and moves slowly and tries to calmly collaborate with my child. But there are some days when I’m just a parent. Who uses a playpen to separate hitting brothers and dissociates with my headphones for 5mn and DOESN’T give choices because we just need to get tf outside. Sometimes I’m just a parent. And sometimes, that’s okay too. Ft the brief time Conall WASN’T crying yesterday—because he was trying to skip nap and was quite delighted he got forbidden 1:1 parent time.
