šMedtroncia x Mental Health: (((Reverb))) Iāve been listening to a lot of dub and dub techno lately and Iām seemingly calmer so I dedicated to see if there was any research about how music can influence our nervous system ā there is research that shows how music can lower cortisol, activate our parasympathetic nervous system and the vagus nerve, and slow our heart rate. Thereās one study that specifically mentions reverb and how it helps our brain perceive space and space = safety which calms the nervous system. For context- Studies like this are mainly done on music as a whole rather than on specific genres or sounds. They more so focus on the tempo of music. āØWhile these studies, except for one, donāt directly call out āreverb,ā they do highlight traits found in reverb-rich music: slower tempos and spacious textures which, are all associated with the findings in these studies. ā Again Iām connecting the dots: the immersive space created by reverb might be one reason genres like Dub or dub techno which use a lot of reverb, can have these effects on us. āØāØI encourage you to be your own test subject and try it for yourself. But keep in mind, everyone responds differently to sounds, so it may not be true for you, but it was true for the people in these studies and for me. āØāØItās not a clinical claim ā itās a theory. The research I found suggests this. If I had a research grant I would love to do a study specifically on reverb.
