Sergei Rachmaninoff composed the Thirteen Preludes, Op. 32, in 1910 at his estate in Ivanovka. Together with his Prelude in C-sharp minor, Op. 3 No. 2, and Ten Preludes, Op. 23, the set completes a cycle of 24 preludes in all major and minor keys. Prelude No. 12 in G-sharp minor (Allegro) is the penultimate piece in the Op. 32 set and was performed frequently by the composer. Sviatoslav Richter (1915–1997) was a Soviet pianist and a graduate of the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied with Heinrich Neuhaus. He made his public debut in 1934 and became known for a wide repertoire and international tours. Richter performed this piece in Moscow on 10 October 1976. This recording is part of a series of live documents of his work, many of which were released posthumously.
