Pablo de Sarasate composed Zigeunerweisen (Gypsy Airs), Op. 20, in 1878. Though commonly associated with Romani music, the piece draws on Hungarian themes, including melodies by Elemér Szentirmay and Franz Liszt. Premiered in Leipzig the same year, it quickly became a staple for violin virtuosos and remains one of Sarasate’s most recorded works. The piece is structured in four contrasting sections and scored for violin and orchestra, though a piano reduction also exists. Sarasate himself recorded the work in 1904, omitting the third section due to the time limitations of early records. Itzhak Perlman (b. 1945) is an Israeli-American violinist and conductor, widely considered one of the most important classical musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries. Born in Tel Aviv, he studied in New York at the Juilliard School with Ivan Galamian and Dorothy DeLay. Perlman contracted polio at age four and has walked using leg braces and crutches since then and plays the violin while seated. He has performed worldwide and throughout the United States, in venues that have included a state dinner for Elizabeth II at the White House in 2007, and at the 2009 inauguration of Barack Obama, and has won 16 Grammy Awards, 4 Emmy Awards.
