If you’re tasked with analysing some text-based data, the first thing you’ll likely want to do is get a taste and feel of the data. Thanks to recent improvements in Copilot, you can use prompts to analyse and discover insights and common sentiments. In the video example, a collection of product reviews is present in A1:B50. After asking Copilot to "summarise the reviews", a high-level summary of the data is returned, focusing on the positive and negative trends, as well as other major findings about customer support and product usability and performance. The next step is then to ask it to "categorise each review as 'Positive', 'Neutral', or 'Negative' in column C". This generates one of its suggested long-winded formulas along with an explanation. There’s also an 'Insert Column' button. Hovering over this displays a preview of the results, and clicking it confirms them. The formulas work first by checking for a single instance of one of the positive words like 'love' 'impressed', or 'fantastic'. If found, the review is classified as 'Positive'. Otherwise, it proceeds to check for a negative word like 'regret', 'waste', or 'poor'. If it succeeds, the review gets a 'Negative' classification. And if neither is found, then it’s 'Neutral'. The final prompt attempted is "show me insights". This returns a chart and some text that identifies there are 32 positive reviews, 14 negative, and three neutral. It’s still early days, and there are plenty of things that can certainly be improved, but you can already see the nascent potential that Copilot has for text analysis without depending on Python.
